Taking a Leap of Faith

While I've been nervous about committing to a jumpsuit, with this one, I could see myself taking a leap of faith.  Priced at $44, this gray wardrobe stunner will be sure to garner some praise for a fashion forward step.  Wondering how to make it a modest look for Ramadan?  Check out related style tips here.

London Fever

London Fever has hit me head on, and I'm FIERCELY forcused on women's gymnastics, starting tonight. (In a separate post another day, I might tell you about my gymnastics background - but know that I performed - leotard and leggings to maintain modesty! - through high school and continued after college until I started running marathons.  Wait, that's pretty much the story...)

Anyway, Dorothy Perkins, one of our our favorite British fashion houses is having a huge sale.  Items are on sale left and right.  Below, we picked out a few of our favorites.  Each item is on sale for $50 or less.

FAVORITE FIND: Retro Zigzag Cardigan from Forever 21

It's easy to love color and prints and affordability and Forever 21 makes it easy to do.  I'm hoping to find this on my next trip to the mall.

*I say "hope" because as we all know, Forever 21 is a treasure chest of clothing splitting at the seams in organized chaos - our favorite needle-in-the-hay situation.

LOVING IT: Pleated Skirts

After seeing the outfit from Atlantic-Pacific featured in this post, I've been coveting a pleated skirt.  A friend of mine dazzled in this beautiful version from Theory in class recently.  The price tag is a bit out of my reach, but one can drool, right?

A bit more manageable for most budgets are these pleated skirts below, all $42 or less.  For me personally, I'm looking into the one from The Limited or Urban Outfitters.  Think you might pick one up?  Let us know in the comments!

FAVORITE FIND: Cassidy Linen Blend Fit & Flare Pant by The Limited (revisited)

"How do I love thee/ Let me count the ways/ Infinity to infinity/ Plus ten days" -Salt N Pepa, Upside Down (Round and Round)

While that's a 90s reference, these pants are definitely timeless.  I wrote about them a leeetle over a month ago about how excited I was to wear them this summer, having made the purchase last summer.  Well ladies, get excited because these are now $32!

Check out these styles for your next iftar gathering, or just some plain modest Muslim American fashion.  Let us know what you think by leaving comments!

For starters, try them with a boyfriend blazer.  We recommend the Stitched Collar Jacket by The Limited, which we recently gave away to one of our dedicated readers.

You know those Pam Breeze-ly tunics from ModCloth we still love?  Try a loose and relaxed look with a bright tunic and these wide-leg pants.

Mix in that hi-low/dipped hem style for an ethereal look (modest-ify with a long tunic tee underneath for some skin and form coverage).

How about any of the shirtdresses you currently own?

A New Look at Denim

Denim's younger, fresher cousin, the chambray shirt, has made its understated debut into fashion this summer.  The chambray has the chameleon effect of pairing with just about anything in your closet.  One of my style faves, Katie Holmes, has been one of its warmest welcomers and recently rocked the style with some modest style.

Katie's shirt is actually from the  Gap, which while sold out online, has a number of copy-cat derivatives at various other stores.  Match it with your favorite maxi skirt or dress and add a bit of flair to your next iftar gathering!

Reader Request: Casual BBQ Attire

Reader Nadia wrote in, asking on how to style a modest look for a casual BBQ wedding reception.

"I'm going to a wedding tomorrow night followed by a reception at the same hotel.  What the heck am I supposed to wear to the "casual" BBQ?  I can't wear dresses and cardigans because the neck lines are always cut too low for my boobs.  I think jeans might be too casual."

We offered up a few suggestions of how to mix lightknit wear with modest styling for that casual BBQ result.

Hi-low tops are trending all over the stores lately.  Pair a printed or lace high-low tunic top with cropped ankle pants or wide-leg linen pants for some outdoor style, adding bright colors for the summer appeal.

Feel free to color block or go monochromatic with the same style.

Stores are carrying a lot of florals and lace, a signature summer look.  Mix a lace tunic with a crop top (the hem should be a tee shirt hem) to create the look for a lace-hemmed top.

Muslim women are also winning big with maxi skirts and maxi dresses, the maxi-er, the better.  Pairing the billowy bottom with a conservatively cut top balances the a silhouette from becoming too "drapey".

Pick a color from a printed dress and pull it out with a cropped top.  The shortened waistline allows a high-waisted skirt to breathe.

If you have a printed top, balance the large print with a solid color or dipped hem maxi skirt.
