[FAVORITE FIND] 2015 Modest Oscar Fashion (and your own Oscar buys!)

I don't own a TV or have cable service - you guys, anything that matters is streamed these days! - except for nights like tonight, when the Oscars are on and you can't obsess over the red carpet gowns.

Then again, internet again saves the day. A blanket thank you to all the media services out there who have top notch coverage of the Oscars red carpet!

A quick scan through, I've found the gowns I love and ones I don't. Since haters gon' hate hate hate, I'll leave the hating to other blogs and shows. Instead, I've listed my favorites, in order of "love" to "backup to the backup"

If you're a frequent reader, you know I love my sequins. This being a blog about modest fashion, I'm also all about anything with sleeves and long hemlines. Fortunately, the Academy Awards are an elegant affair and you can get at least one of the two in a red carpet dress. Sleeves, length, and style? You hit bingo!

So here we go with Farrah's review:

Best overall: Emma Stone

Except for the slit, this has everything I could want in a modest gown. Sleeves and sparkles and color and a fabulous cut (again, except for the slit, though I get it - sex appeal) - where can I get one in my size?

Best sequins: Anna Faris

SEQUINS! Be still my heart! Everyone knows my love for sequins - it's well documented throughout this blog - and Anna Faris hit it right on the mark with a classic silver ballgown with sequins. This is something I could see Audrey Hepburn wearing, it's so classic. While as a modest dress, we'd need to find some way to cover the bare shoulders and arms, but otherwise, it's perfect.

Bold color: Ava DuVernay
Have you guys seems Selma? If not, do yourself a favor and go see it. With all that the US has dealt with in terms of civil issues the past year, the movie is a great reminder of 1) what a group of committed citizen is capable of doing to change for the better and 2) we still have work to do, but we need to do it in a smart, non-violent way. Ava DuVernay's dress follows what seems to be the trend of the 2015 Academy Awards - the column dress. It's cut almost in a straight line from the hips, giving the person a more statuesque appearance (too bad they can't do this for guys, Kevin Hart). I love the elbow-length bell sleeves and the beaded embroidery across her shoulders and neck. And of course, color!

Best optical illusion: Solange Knowles
I don't necessarily love Solange's "dress" but it did make me look twice. It's a wide-leg pantsuit with an asymmetrical draped "window" style (I'm not sure if that's the right term but I remember seeing Taylor Swift's 2015 Grammy dress called that) that is a super win for modest fashion.

The Academy must have lost my invitation, because I am ready with a dress. Or rather, I would have been. I'd have gone the Angelina Jolie route - being budget conscious but stylish. Asos is my go-to for items in both categories and thankfully, it also carries plenty of sequin-heavy clothing.

[FAVORITE FIND] Wick-It Wader from Athleta

Last year, after much hand-wringing and deliberation, I purchased this Wick-It Wader top from Athleta. My hesitation came from the price tag - $69 for something to sweat in?! how is that okay? After months (seriously, MONTHS) of wanting it, I closed my eyes and clicked "submit" on the order sitting in front of me. And I have not regretted it since.

I've worn this top at CrossFit, during the Nike Half Marathon in DC, and workouts in-between. To say it's my favorite is an understatement - I look forward to wearing this top and think I work out harder, better, faster, and generally more excitedly because of it.

In all my 13.1 sweaty glory with the Tiffany finishers necklace
I HIGHLY recommend this workout top! As a Muslim woman, I feel more confident when I workout because the top is long - extending well past my waist and over my bottom. While I will wear tee shirts while working out, for my, having my arms covered (yes, even on hot days) still feels better than wearing something I'm worried if crosses over into the "less than modest" category.

Even if you're not worried as much about modest workout clothes, get this top! It's great for cooler workouts - early morning falls, in the winter - because it's quick drying (superior sweat wicking capabilities), lightweight, and comes in fun colors. Plus, what woman doesn't want a little extra ass...et coverage when she's working out?

FAVORITE FIND: Ark & Co Tie Neck Maxi Dress

Here's another Favorite Find I couldn't wait to post.

This Ark & Co Tie Neck maxi dress features a fully lined, banded waist skirt. With a cut that elongates the shoulders, the dress can be worn with a flowing sleeves under it (see example here) or a traditional long cardigan. I recommend pairing it with bright colors for some extra pizazz (almost any color would work - I'm imagining something aqua - then again, I really want to go to the beach...).

For only $79 with free shipping and 7% back when you shop through Ebates (use my link referral here to help me get credit!), this dress will become your Favorite Find as well.

FAVORITE FINDS: Glamour, not "Beauty", Products

You know that sound a machine makes when it's changing directions? There are a lot of clicks, followed by some whirring and finally a solid locking sound to know that a new course has been set? I think that's happening in my life and I like it. I haven't yet heard that final sound, but who really does? You're too excited for all that's happening to really pay attention.

A few of the exciting things are known, but some are not and for those that are known, I need new makeup. Ha, I know, strange lead in to this post, amirite?

This post is a little bit (no, it's a lot) departure from my usual clothing posts because I've been looking at a lot of makeup lately. My family gets to celebrate a few special events coming up soon and I've decided it's time to refresh my makeup - the last time I did so was 3.5 years ago.

I do enjoy wearing makeup and I've received compliments when I've done my eye makeup, which is a high compliment to someone who can barely draw stick figures, let alone paint or draw. I don't wear makeup daily, just for special occasions (and place where there will be a lot of cameras) because those are the only times I think it's appropriate.

A PSA announcement to us all: you are beautiful as is and there is no need to have to paint your face daily to feel like "your best self" or a new version of you. There is no need to change up your look daily. Your best self is right there, on a day to day basis. Makeup is simply a good way to add some glamour - NOT BEAUTY - to your look and only if you want it.

So here are Farrah's Favorite Finds/Deep Desires in the makeup retail market these days. You'll notice it leans heavy on the eye shadow side (reference the above paragraphs) but lacks variety. That's because I'm in the market for new mascaras and liners (especially liquid!) and happily taking suggestions. That goes for lipsticks as well (a great nude pink would be welcome). Also, if anyone knows a thing or two about contouring, please help.

1. Eye shadow palettes

I tend to wear dramatic colors (aqua, deep purples) so it's hard for me to create softer looks. The Urban Decay Naked 3 palette has 12 shimmery, rosy hues for those events where I don't want all eyes on my eyes.

Urban Decay at ShopStyle

Urban Decay also has similar palettes, named Naked and Naked 2. To be quite honest, I want to own all of them, but am limiting myself to Naked 3 to start.

How do you know which one to get? All three palettes promise a neutral experience but do highlight different skin tones. I can't do justice to the reviews so check them out here: http://goo.gl/fF0C8M

I'm also INCREDIBLY in love with this Yves Saint Laurent palette in my signature purple eyeshadow.

Yves Saint Laurent at ShopStyle

This one comes with an aubergine color that anchors a soft copper-infused peach, pink, and green accents. Love love LOVE. Not a fan of the price tag, but for someone who only buys makeup every 3-4 years, the price amortizes over time (how do you like that MBA speak?!).

A very special reader sent me the palette below as a graduation gift and I can't get enough of it. I'd never looked into Kat Von D's line but turns out she's got some really cool stuff.

undefined

This palette, called "Poetica", is an array of gothic and romantic colors that can be mixed and matched to create a myriad of looks. I love it because it's different than what I currently own and like the idea of being able to pull off some more Jessica Alba dark makeup looks.

2. Face makeup and tools

I've been having some progressive results with my latest skincare endeavor, using the Rodan + Fields Unblemish system for 3 weeks (today starts the fourth!).

Side conversation on that: My friend Kate recently started selling Rodan + Fields products after experience really noticeable results. She's someone who either LOVES something or HATES it and she LOVES R+F. The things she loves generally fall into my own loves, so I decided to take the plunge and start an R+F regiment. So far, so good. I can't say it's 100% better but it's only the 4th week. It's a bit pricey, I'll admit, but worth the trial if you can budget it in. Here's Kate's site and tell her Farrah/Greater Lengths sent you! https://kswalker.myrandf.com/

Investing in R+F is my insurance against the need to use foundation so this sponge falls into the one of those things I don't REALLY need but for hype, am considering the purchase.

The foundation I when I use foundation is Make Up For Ever High Definition Foundation, which I bought for a roughly $70 set from Sephora (okay, realized I bought this last year - so ONE new thing in 3 years). It came with primer, concealer, a kabuki brush, setting powder, and a full size bottle of foundation - a GREAT deal. Really, I did the cost comparison and it's a steal.

Sadly, the microfinish setting powder was a casualty of graduation recently - the bag containing it got lost between the ceremony and reception at the business school.

Not to say that expensive, high end foundations are the way to go.  I am a huge fan of L'Oreal's True Match foundation, which I may go back to after I use my current bottle of foundation. L'Oreal really has created a line of foundations for every skintone and one that provides natural coverage.

Continuing in the vein of face makeup, I've been hearing a lot about this Maybelline Dream Lumi highlighter and concealer. My friend Sabba commented on my Pinterest board that it's as good - or even better - than her Dior alternative. Considering it's around $8 without a coupon, it's a low-risk investment that may have major beauty payouts.

When and if I end up getting this stuff, I'll try to keep you guys in the know. Let me know if you already own these things or end up getting them yourself!

FAVORITE FIND: Pants with Bow Detail by Asos

In my previous post, I posted these bow pants, which are SUPER cute. Let's review:
  • Pleated front (which for a while I thought was a terrible look but I've come back around)
  • Bow detail
  • Muted spring palette
  • Ankle length
These pants are great for the spring and summer - lightweight, but with structure. Think of all your spring events coming up - baby showers, bridal showers, frolics in the park! These are the pants for you. They're a departure from the skirted leg-norm that spring and summer seems to mandate on us modest-dressing women, and a welcome one at that.

The loose front also provides a little more modesty for those who don't need to share with the worth EXACTLY how long your inseam is, which goes the same for the rear.

These pants are also a great way to incorporate the cropped top look, kind of like the model (but with less midriff). Or, tuck in your favorite roll-tabbed split-neck blouse.

Either way, these pants are the modest fashion on-trend piece for the spring.

FAVORITE FIND: Moroccan Open Front Cardigans from Nylii

When I told people that I was going to Morocco, everyone's wide-eyed and exclamation-mark riddled emails went on and on about all the great shopping I'd experience.

Sadly, I was a witness from afar.  While our Moroccan activities were many, they left little in the way of available time for shopping.

So Nylii's newest cardigans do take me back to the glorious doors and extravagant colors of Marrakech, a city that grows bigger at every turn.  These cardigans, or capes as I've called them in my head, are a glorious $28, so it's hard to get only one.  And when you order, tell Nylii that Greater Lengths sent you!

FAVORITE FIND: Tinley Road Chevron Print Dress from Piperlime

As I wrote on Facebook, I'm on cloud nine after getting an email from a reader.  Mav emailed me to tell me how much she LOVES (it was in all caps!) the blog.

I love hearing from you guys and knowing that this blog is making your modest shopping mission easier, but that you aren't breaking the bank and loving what you're wearing.  I don't do this for (much) money (really it's just enough to keep it going! Clicks on links = money towards the block!) - it's more to keep people from feeling the frustration I did during my black bridesmaid dress search.

Anyway, here's a post for tonight before I go bake some goodies for my older brother's birthday (yes, I know it's 11:22 pm at night, but apparently sleep is not for me tonight - plus, I'm too hyped from the email!)  It's a beautiful chevron print dress, part of the Tinley Road brand at Piperlime.  This long-sleeved dress can be worn as a top with a great pair of jeans or trousers, or even with leggings and tall boots.

At only $32, it's a wonderful addition to your closet.  With a long boyfriend sweater, it's transitions easily from early to late fall!

FAVORITE FIND: Shiva Top from Athleta

Earlier this year, I met with a friend who is designing the ultimate modest workout top.  She's also a Muslim woman, and after coaching a Muslim girls youth soccer league, she's applying her engineering skills to addressing the gap in modest workout clothing.  I'm really excited about the product she will bring to the table.

In the meantime, the search for modest workout clothes continues, but this top from Athleta makes the fight just a bit easier.

The Shiva Top, on sale for $34.99, features a long hemline, falling well past the waistline, for an easy fit and maximum torso coverage.  The 3/4 length sleeves are ruched to allow ample movement while still providing coverage, and the top curves gracefully along your torso without clinging too tight in the wrong places. The one thing this shirt is missing is the ability to wick sweat away, which I almost always prefer in a workout top - however, for the coverage and comfort, I'm willing to let that go this one time. The Shiva Top is on my "to buy" list and in so many different colors, you're sure to find your perfect one too.

FAVORITE FIND: Pink Contrast Pussy Bow Blouse

I'm compiling a post for a reader (coming tomorrow!) and came across this.  I'm fighting every bone in my body to not just purchase it now (an extra 25% off if you're a student!).  I love the loose fit and the off-center bow on the mock collar, and the neutral pink on nude chiffon layers.  With a pair of wide-leg pants, this is a great dress-me-up/dress-me-casual top.  Are you as tempted to buy this?
