[Under $50] Tweets from Last Night

Last night I said this:

And then I styled myself an outfit for my friend Kate's wedding in June.  So, I lied.  Oops.  (But you remember how I get about school and procrastination).

The wedding is still 6 weeks away (I'm sure it feels like less time to her!) so it'll be a while until I post any photos...or maybe I'll do a dress rehearsal and post some early :)

I love this long, sea green skirt - it's so loose and flowy and FRESH, which is often hard to find in the stale, stagnant pool of black maxi skirts.  I plan to pair it with the cream lace cropped top (last seen at this wedding).  The skirt is only $25 from Forever 21 and the lace top was around $20 from Forever 21 last year.

The skirt sits high on the waist, so I can comfortably pair the cropped lace top without showing any stomach, important to a modest dresser like me.  Since the dress is long (it does strangely hang lower in the front than the back), I plan to wear my 3.5-inch Rampage Gersham heels to keep the skirt from sweeping the floor.

Looking to recreate the outfit yourself?  Here are some cropped lace tops to pair with those modest long skirts.  Let me know if you end up wearing the outfit yourself!

Winter Wonderland

I've never been a fan of the cold but I've always been a fan of sweaters.  Bulky, oversized, chunky, warm, cozy, soft, fleecey sweaters.  They're super easy to wear as a Muslim woman, or really - ANY woman - but with the added bonus of modest style and usually in fashion!

This photo came across our Pinterest feed recently, and of course, I had to repost.  It's a cute style for any Muslim woman and translates well at any age - from fashion-risk high schooler, to style-developing college student, to chic and sophisticated post-20s.

Dress in Autumn - Scarlets, Russets, Maroons, & Burgundies

In anticipation for this supposed storm that's hitting the Northern Virginia region/entire East Coast region, my brother and I decided to rake the leaves lying outside (wet leaves are SUCH a hassle).  The storm is not here but the leaves are gone, and with it, all the beautiful scarlets and maroons and golds and pumpkins and burnt oranges and yellows that littered the lawn in such a Picasso-like dazzle of color.

You can recreate the look of an autumnal yard with some of these finds.  Check out the other posts (like this one on mustards and golds) for all your fabulous modest and stylish Muslim women clothing finds.  There's something for everyone this fall!

Celebrating Eid in College

I did not exit college with many regrets.  Yes, it would have been nice to study abroad.  There are also a few semesters for which I'd like to hit a giant restart button.  The one that plagues me most is that I don't recall celebrating Eid al-Adha...or even Eid al-Fitr...while in school.

I have no other reason than I didn't make it priority.  Granted, I was in school and there were classes and finals to attend, but in looking back, it would have been nice to do something - wear a new shirt, have an extra piece of cake, skip a class to go to the local masjid for Eid namaz/salaat/prayer (choose your term).  Something to mark what is in Islamic calendar a momentous few days.

So to all college Muslim female students out there (especially those who may not be able to break away from school):  make it a point to live it up this upcoming Eid al-Adha.  En route to your morning class, take the time to dress nicely (as is sunnah) and remember the day is more than just about getting through it.  No need for a grand gesture, but break out a sparkly belt or a pretty dress you are saving for a special occasion and proudly celebrate Eid!

Need a few ideas on how to revive that outfit?

A shimmery tunic with gold bead work from Rock and Republic, available at Kohl's for $19.50, paired with a toned out gray ballet wrap from Target , and classic black dress pants add a blare of color to an otherwise muted outfit.

Add some sparkly to a neutral-toned outfit!  Pair this Mossimo maxi from Target for $29.99, knit cardigan from Old Navy for $18, and chevron sequin-striped tank from Delias for $19.50 for a "did I just see that?" double-take.

Don't be shy to go all out with a gold-sequined tank peeking out from a coordinated cardigan.  This tank is available at Forever 21 for only $12.40, and the cardigan is a staple buy from your local Old Navy (for only $18!)

Kohl's Under $50

Truth be told, I haven't shopped at Kohl's in quite some time...perhaps since the year after I graduated college.  In college, it (alongside with Old Navy) was my go-to - it met the price, quality, and variety I looked for in clothing.  Post-college, I've discovered that disposable income can take you away from your shopping roots and therefore have been pleasantly surprised how many great items have appeared at Kohl's in the last few years.

We've rounded up a few of our favorite current Kohl's items for the fall and winter season.  See anything you like?  Let us know in the comments!

Kohl's tops:
So many things in the mix below that I love, including the Dana Buchman lurex cardigan in navy and the Rock and Republic drop-tail hem top!  It comes in a soft rose color, which is not shown below.

Kohl's bottoms:
I love the muted candy-colored hues of the corduroys and both the gray and brown leggings.

Mix and match these to your comfort level of modesty!

A New Look at Denim

Denim's younger, fresher cousin, the chambray shirt, has made its understated debut into fashion this summer.  The chambray has the chameleon effect of pairing with just about anything in your closet.  One of my style faves, Katie Holmes, has been one of its warmest welcomers and recently rocked the style with some modest style.

Katie's shirt is actually from the  Gap, which while sold out online, has a number of copy-cat derivatives at various other stores.  Match it with your favorite maxi skirt or dress and add a bit of flair to your next iftar gathering!
