Modest Marvel: Halima Ahmad

I've been corresponding with Halima Ahmed, our latest Modest Marvel, for almost the entire year.  I found her through the magic of Twitter around the start of this year, but between the two of us, we never managed to seal the deal on having her as a Modest Marvel.

However, neither of us gave up on each other, and so here she is - Halima Ahmed, our latest Modest Marvel!

Name: Halima Ahmad

Background: Halima is a 22-year old student from Atlanta, GA, in her final semester of undergrad.  Her graduation in December will bestow her with a bachelors in marketing and minor in Arabic.  She has a strong penchant for travelling and is looking to make that a part of her professional life after college.  "I’m obsessed with travelling and hope my future job allows me to do a lot of it!" she writes.

What we love about her style: Colors and texture are the quickest ways to my heart and Halima has plenty to spare.  She knows how to do it all - mix and match prints and textures with a range of tones, and always adds her best accessory to each look - her smile!

Your Favorite pieces: "Anyone who has ever met me knows I can’t live without my cheetah print scarves! I have at least three,"she writes.  She works these scarves with a variety of items in shades of maroon, baby pink, navy blue, olive, and tan - colors that work year round when mixed with other "seasonal colors."

About your style: With a varied routine, Halima's day to day style "depends on my mood or what I have going on that day!"  As a business student, she amps her look with business casual look wearing plenty of blazers.  "Other days, you’ll see me in anything from maxi skirts with heeled ankle boots, to striped sweaters with oxfords, to oversized shirts with some Converse or Vans."

What are you looking to achieve in an outfit?: As with many Muslim women, I want to show that you can have fun with fashion while still being modest. Wearing hijab makes you a walking exemplar of Islam, and I think it’s important to remember that in your wardrobe choices.


What makes an outfit?:  "Confidence is key!", says Halima, citing that confidence is the first thing that people will notice about a person.  More tangibly, she says her scarf is what pulls her outfit together, but then cheekily adds, "a rad lipstick never hurt anybody."

Modest Marvel: Noha Hamid (ISNA 2013 day 3)

While the bazaar had a lot of Modest Marvel hits, from previous years, I recall seeing some gems hanging out on the upstairs level of the convention center, so I took a break - and was instantly rewarded with meeting Noha Hamid.  What I especially loved is that when I asked the initial, "can I take your picture" question (it tends to make a lot of people skeptical, even timid - completely understandable!), she JUMPED at the opportunity - even letting me pose in a few times before moving into the interview phase.

Name: Noha Hamid
Background: This aspiring photographer is a world-traveling adventurer with an eye for fashion - and she's still in college!  Noha was at ISNA, visiting from Atlanta.  Ethnically Egyptian, Noha spends her summer vacations to go abroad as often as she can, capturing the world in rich colors and shades of light (her Facebook page is available here).
What we love about her style:  She likes to keep it interesting, with on-trend printed skinny denim combined with a white tunic blouse and deep navy blazer (two must-have staples!).  Rather than the standard heels, Noha opted for suede saddle shoes in a neutral tone and some sparkly pearls to tie it all together.  What's great is that while this outfit is a definite win, it's one of a kind and Noha's friends know they'll never see it again; rather she'll remix these pieces for a whole new modest style!

Modest Marvel: Hira Jamil (ISNA 2013 day 3)

I spotted Hira Jamil's shoes first and knew that the rest of her had to be a "Modest Marvel."  She was walking through the ISNA bazaar with some friends and her sister, spending the weekend celebrating her sister's birthday.  The entire group had big smiles, evident they were enjoying their weekend, and making the most of their time together.

Name: Hira Jamil
Background: This college sophomore, who grew up in Northern Virginia, is currently studying global affairs.  Her eyes are on a career in international relations.
What we love about her style: Even amongst all the well-dressed ladies of the ISNA bazaar (and there were a ton!), Hira's outfit easily caught our eyes.  She clearly knows how to put an outfit together that's both edgy and feminine.  The fashion-forward harem parents ("from Turkey!") paired nicely with a classic loose blouse, in a color scheme every girl could put goether.  Her strappy gold wedges to give her petite frame some extra lift, all tied together with a bit of sparkle around her neck!
Favorite pieces: Hira gravitates towards long, flowy blouses, but especially loves blazers.
What are you looking to achieve in an outfit?:  With a sunny personality, Hira prefers her style reflects her similarly.  She steers away from dark colors, and generally wears things that reflects her mood.
Your no-limit gift card would be to...?: H&M!  "They have different styles for everyone, and a lot of their stuff can be made "halal" easily.  It's all affordable too!"

Modest Marvel: Hanane Yeslam (ISNA 2013 day 3)

The weird thing about this segment, at least for me, is approaching perfect strangers and asking them to take their pictures.

"Um, you don't know me, but I run a blog - can I take your picture for the internet? - See, I run a blog - it's about modest fashion and where to find modest style! - and you've got great style! - so can  take a picture of you?"

Sometimes you see someone and think, I want to take their picture, but they're busy or probably won't respond well.  And then you see someone like Hanane Yeslam, who was on the phone when you first spot her and her printed palazzo pants with color block button down, and hope that you she doesn't notice the number of times you're walking by, hoping she'll be done with her conversation soon.  And then you get lucky and run into her later (when plan A doesn't pan out).

Name: Hanane Weslam
Background:  A woman of law, Hanane recently graduated from undergrad and is now a paralegal at a DC-area firm.  She's also a woman after my own heart - a photographer and fashion blogger herself.  You can find her here at http://missalnahdi.tumblr.com/ - in fact, I highly recommend it because I just got lost in her blog for about an hour myself.
What we love about her style:  Hanane carries off mixed printed palazzo pants with a colorblocked button down.  Ordinarily, that would be a fashion trend overload, but her play with subtle colors and separating trends between articles of clothing and regions where they're worn just plain work.
About her style: Hanane says she rotates her look often, depending on her mood.  "Sometimes it's grunge, sometimes it's business-like, sometimes it's Americana."
Your favorite pieces:  She gravitates towards tops and loves a good pattern.
What do you want your look to say?  For her day to day styling, she wants her clothes to relay that while she is a hijab-wearing Muslim woman, it doesn't preclude her from having edgy style and changing looks.
Your no-limit gift card would be to...?: This one she thought about for a while, but ultimately chose ZARA for their clean European look.  For a second, she teetered on Free People, citing her love of their long and flowy Bohemian-inspired pieces, but that took a second place seat.

Modest Marvel: Nada Osman (ISNA 2013 day 3)

One of my favorite things about scouting out Modest Marvels is the discovery of meeting a sweet soul behind the style, which is exactly who Nada Osman is.  While we only chatted for a few minutes, it was evident how sweetly kind soft-spoken she was - always giving her friend, Henane, an opportunity to answer before I requested a response from her.  She wore one of the biggest trends at ISNA 2013 - animal print - and a pairing of warm colors gave her some

Name: Neda Osman
Background: This college sophomore, who also works at her school's MBA office, is working on her accounting degree.
What we love about her style:  While Nada claims she gravitates towards darker, muted colors, this is clearly a woman who knows how to add some sparkle and pizazz to her look.  The long black sleeveless cardi over a draped scarlet top and dark skinny jeans was livened up with a leopard print scarf and gold-toned sandals and jewelry.
Favorite pieces: Nada's closet staples are tunic-length tops, and she's working on bringing more patterns into her wardrobe.
Your no-limit gift card would be to...?: "Macy's," she cites, saying every time she's in the market for new clothes "they always have something!

Modest Marvel: Huda Saeb (ISNA 2013 Day 2)

We kick off our Modest Marvels for ISNA 2013 with Huda Saeb, a fresh-faced sophomore from Atlanta, whose shimmery secretary's top caught our fancy.

Name: Huda Saeb
Background: Huda, a sophomore from Atlanta, is at ISNA for the first time.  While she claims not to have any hobbies, she is one the founding members of UpLift, a youth organization aimed to bring together masjids in Atlanta with the intention of motivating youth and bringing them together.
What we love about her style: The soft colors caught our eye as Huda browsed through one of the booths.  She had an easy movement through the crowd, which gave way to her calm presence in the hustle and bustle.
Your Favorite pieces: Huda seeks longer tunic-length tops.  As she says, she likes "solid colors" and is firm about the waistline falling below her waist.
About your style:  She says her style borders on "formal" or "dressy", and rarely ever wears t-shirts.  She often shops at Forever 21, Macy's, and Charlotte Russe.
What are you looking to achieve in an outfit?:  (What message do you like to send out with your look(s)?)
What makes an outfit? Huda looks for simple, classic, clean attire - "not over the top"

Modest Marvel: Sherene Heshmat (ISNA 2013 day 2)

I was doing a final lap of the ISNA bazaar on Saturday before meeting my mom, but when I saw Sherene and her blinge-y shirt rounding the corner with her friend Noor, I figured my mom could wait a few extra minutes.

While it was Sherene's entire outfit that I couldn't let get away, what especially surprised me were her pants, which weren't in fact a skirt but rather palazzo pants that had a gathered, pleated waist band.  How's that for a marvel?

Name: Sherene Heshmat
Background: Sherene is an assistant banker who graduated from the University of Maryland who likes her designer labels.
What we love about her style:  My love for sequins is well-documented, so when I saw the metallic studs of Sherene's top, she was clearly a girl after my own heart.  At first glance, Sherene's bottoms looked like a skirt, but she skillfully paired silky palazzo pants with a chrometastic tank over a long-sleeve tee.  Her gilted tank popped out against the muted blacks, an excellent pairing if I've seen one.
What do you look to achieve in your style:  As a hijab-wearing woman, Sherene's goal is for people to see her fashion and someone having fun, not an oppressed religious woman.  She likes to stay on trend with bold designs and designer labels (check out her Louis bag!)
Favorite pieces: Printed pants and blazers are Noha's wardrobe must-haves!

Modest Marvel: Rohma Sahib (ISNA 2013 day 2)

When the Spice Girls were big, I was all about Sporty Spice.  Being a gymnast and all around active kid, I rejected pink and other characteristics that may have given anyone the idea that I was a girly girl.  Remember Kristy Thomas and Mary Anne Spier from The Babysitters Club?  I was also rooting for Kristy and annoyed at Mary Anne.

That preference surfaces from time to time, which is how I spotted Rohma Sahib at ISNA.  She had a straightforward, uncomplicated outfit without looking boring - a little bit of feminine edge mixed in with an athletic casualness.

Name: Rohma Sahib
Background: A senior in at University of Maryland, she's studying English and (something else, but my messy notes are now indecipherable!), but with the intention of getting her masters in psychology soon after her undergraduate degree.
What we love about her style:  Rohma's style appealed to my wanna-be Californian, free spirit, breezy casual side.  She sported a pair of skinny cuffed jeans with a lacy baby doll hi-low top and Sperry's - the ultimate in comfortable shoes (I've been eyeing a shimmery pair from Nordstrom and her outfit has pretty much sold me on them!).  In the waves of silky fabrics, Rohma showed us that dressing up wasn't the only way to maintain modesty in style.
About her style:  Rohma trends towards a 1920s vintage look, with lots of lace and loose flapper inspired looks, mixed with Bohemian grunge.

Modest Marvel: Noor Zehra (ISNA 2013 Day 2)

When interviewing women for our Modest Marvels, we're usually the ones doing the raving and ranting over them and their outfits - it is their outfit that catches our style and personality that pulls us in!  However, Noor turned the tables on me and instead proceeded to compliment me the entire time we chatted - she and I are definitely new BFFs (oh geez, do people still use that?)  Either way, it made me happy that we're in the same general region (her under grad is my graduate school!) so hopefully there will be more run-ins.

Name: Noor Zehra
Background: While professionally, Noor is a consultant at a big 4 firm ("I'm on the road a lot!"), she's also a loving and completely in-love wife to her husband of two years.  She and her friend Sherene were rounding a bazaar aisle with an easy laugh - a clear indicator of a sweet and fun personality (did you read the part about me wanting to be her BFF??)
What we love about her style:  Her breezy dress and relaxed cardigan made us yearn for some days on the beach.
Favorite pieces:  Noor steers towards anything that's casual and easy, but did that because she's usually cold (I feel ya!), she's almost never without a scarf for an extra layer.
About your style:  Noor described her style simply as "comfortable" - she prefers casual and comfort over rigid structure.
What are you looking to achieve in an outfit?:  Her goal is "blend in" when she can - put together but able to make a style transition from a simple friends gathering to a family outing.
Your no-limit gift card would be to...?: "FOREVER 21!" - Noor's knee-jerk reaction was a firm indicator of her belief in the fast-fashion chain that we also love here at Greater Lengths.  "When I go there, I think, "If this was my closet, I'd be happy.""

Modest Marvel: Hoda Abrahim (ISNA 2013 day 1)

You're seeing two photos and wondering, "um, which one is Day 1?  Why are there two outfits?"

The short answer: the outfit on the right is from ISNA 2013 day 1, but when we went back to Winnie Detwa's booth on day 2, I fell in love with Hoda's outfit all over again, and therefore had to break my own rules.

Name: Hoda Abrahim
Background: Hoda is Egyptian-American, born and raised in North Carolina.  She recently started her junior year of college and is pursuing a degree in nutrition, with a "hopes of being a dietician for a professional sports team (inshallah!)"
What we love about her style:  Her use of prints and bright colors (turns out, she and I both loved the same things about her style, as you read below) were a natural head-turner, but we can't say enough about her great smile.
Favorite pieces: "I'm notorious for wearing some sort of blouse or blazer with high waisted skirts. I love it because there's no limit to my creativity, the possibilities are endless!"
About her style: Hoda couldn't settle on a single term to describe her style, as it changes just about every week; however, she says one thing she never deviates from is bright colors. "You will rarely see me in blacks/ browns. I'm all about orange and yellow and bright pink!"
What she's looking to achieve in an outfit:  As for most Muslim women, her number one concern is modesty and comfort, which go hand-in-hand for her.  "I don't want to walk out of the house and feel self conscious about my body or how revealing an outfit is."  By adding bright colors, she feels like they "brighten" her day (though I'm sure that smile has something to do with that!) and prepares her to take on the world!  "My electric colors are a fake source of vitamin D ;)"
What makes an outfit: "For me, my hijab is the make it or break it piece. It's the final straw that puts the whole outfit together and completes my look. If I'm not feeling my hijab, it's likely I'm not feeling my whole outfit."
Your no-limit gift card would be to...?: "If I had a no limit gift card it would probably be in my older sisters closet. She has been at the fashion game much longer than I and has a much more compete wardrobe than I do. However, if I did have to chose a store, it would be Target! It's my best kept secret, I've never gone in there and not found something I absolutely adore."

Will you be our next #ModestMarvel?

Last year at ISNA, Naima came up with the concept of a "Modest Marvel", or a woman who knows how to put together an outfit to maintain modesty and style both.  These didn't have to be someone in the current vein of fashion (though it didn't hurt!) - these were people whose outfits stood out in a crowd of what could have been a homogenic sea of maxi skirts and tops.

We're bringing our Modest Marvels back with a vengeance.  I say "we," but I'll be missing my partner in crime as she lays on her rumpus.  Okay, in medical terms it's called "bedrest" but we know what it really is - a reason to lay around in sweatpants!

Modest Marvel: Sara Dahbour (ISNA 2013 day 1)

Though we try to spy an eye for style, definitely one of the number one things that catches our attention is an infection smile.  Sara Dahbour had one that may have been brighter than that of Winnie Detwa's whimsical booth, which is where we found her, supporting her friend's launch at ISNA.

Background: This almost 19 year-old (she's getting close to 20!) is a Palestinian-American woman, who, as she describes it, "absolutely loves to laugh."  She is currently in her third year of studying to be a pediatric nurse at a college in North Carolina.
What we love about her style:  Sara has the relaxed casual look down to an art.  Her look the entire time as ISNA was easy and comfortable, clutch style during the long days of ISNA.  Her style, while casual, did not sacrifice on style, fit, and aesthetic.
Your favorite pieces: Her favorite pieces have to be be anything mint or coral! "I'm obsessed!!" she says (check out her enviable mint pants on the left!).  However, she still enjoys the classic black-and-white color combo.  "What can I say? I'm a simple girl."
About your style: She's a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, but doesn't mind getting a little gussied up from time-to-time.  Recently, Sara says she's been "stepping up [her] fashion game", which only means she'l be continuing to wow us!
What are you looking to achieve in an outfit?: "What I want people to know about dressing modestly is that no matter how much you're covered up, your clothes don't make up who you are! YOU make up who you are. You own the clothes, don't let the clothes own you!"
What makes an outfit? (Which one item or piece do you think completes an outfit?) honestly, a smile!
Your no-limit gift card would be for...: "Forever 21! Their clothes are so simple, which is what I love! You can always dress up or dress down a simple piece of clothing!"

MODEST MARVEL: Celebrity Fashion at the 2013 White House Correspondents Dinner

Here in DC, it's rare to have a celebrity sighting.  We're not New York or LA, and for the next 4 years, our only grade A celebrity sighting is Obama (though I've yet to see him in front of me - soon enough!)

However, once a year a magical thing happens - the White House Correspondents Dinner - when all the mystical celebriticism of Hollywood comes crashing down for a night of goodwill and jester towards American journalism (and lately, American journalism is the butt of many jokes...but that's my political rant for another time.)

Here are our favorite modest dressing celebrities from this year's event.  Which dress do you like the most?

Modest Marvel: Sanna "Hijabsta" Naqash

You know how sometimes on your social media networks, you start seeing the same few people on Facebook that you don't actually know?  That's how I "know" Sanna.  She and I had so many overlapping friends but ourselves didn't know each other.  But I couldn't stop stalking her style.

She was always spotted wearing something unique and vibrant, always leaving me wondering, "where did she get that?"

Case in point: this outfit is what compelled me to work my network to get an intro and ask the burning question, "where did you get that top?" (Answer: Kashmir)

Not only do you see her photos and think, "ooh, I wonder where she got that," her smile make you say, "aww, I want to hang out with her!"

Name: Sanna Naqash, aka Hijabsta

Maxi dress: H&M, Cardigan: Forever 21, Hijab: Laila Rowe

Background:  Sanna is a Kashmiri American, currently residing in Northern Virginia.  She majored in psychology at VCU, but her passion is for photography and fashion.  (Check her out on Instagram here.)  It wasn't until 2004, when she first started wearing hijab, that she cites becoming more aware of her style.  "I really don’t know what happened…it’s like layering and wearing cloth after cloth became a prototype of enjoyment and thrill for me, and I started putting my outfits together like one solves and puts the pieces of a puzzle together."

What we love about her style:  What's not to love?  Sanna uses rich colors and textures, and never are any two outfits the same.  Each piece has its own story.  You look at each piece and think, "where did she get that?" and turns out, it's where you've been shopping all along!

Your favorite pieces: Maxi dresses and long, baggy tops "where one side of the shoulder is either strapless or falling down"

About her style: Sanna's style is relaxed, chic, and full of interest.  Each outfit has an element of fun.

What are you looking to achieve in an outfit?: "When I have to get ready and choose an outfit to wear or put together, I just think of what looks fun yet chic at the same time.  I just play around with what I have and put the pieces together.  I would like people to see that dressing up modestly is fun and I enjoy being covered up yet be able to look good."

What makes an outfit?:  "Modest appeal.  For me, it would have to be the hijab I wore that day."

Modest Marvel: Sarah Imam

One of my biggest regrets in college is that I didn't appreciate style and fashion.  You could typically find me sporting a free t-shirt and an oversized sweatshirt hoodie (similar to the one I am wearing as I write this post!), traipsing through campus (love you JMU!).  It's why when I find college students with enviable closets who are maintain a fashion sense while still modestly dressing, I have to highlight their efforts and wins.

Sarah Imam certainly falls in to this category (do you see her tan and black polka dot sweater?!)  She was the recipient of our Greater Lengths giveaway of The Limited Stitched Shawl boyfriend blazer, and sets a standard for how the next generation of modest dressers should look - without sacrificing their values.

Modest Marvel Sarah Imam in her various stylish, modest outfits over her four years of college

Background: A proud product of Northern Virginia schools, Sarah is currently in her final year at University of Virginia, majoring in Foreign Affairs.  She's an avid baker and loves to read classic novels, like Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind
What we love about her style:  Her on-point, easy style that covers up without looking bulky, frumpy, or dowdy.
Your favorite pieces:  Sarah loves her cardigans.  "I always add them on if I feel like I need to add a bit more color to what I’m wearing."  She's also been loving her mint-colored pants.  "It just adds a feeling of freshness to my look."  Her trademark touch is a flower or bow in her hair (definitely a step up from the bandana headbands I used to wear!), which is the ultimate finishing touch to almost all her outfits!
About her style:  A woman after my heart, she cites Zooey Deschanel's character from New Girl as her style inspiration.  Sarah weaves soft, feminine touches in to her outfits.  Currently, she is "obsessed" with peace, mint, and mustard colors", so you'll find her all around UVA grounds or Charlottesville with one of those colors integrated into her outfit.
What are you looking to achieve in an outfit?:  "I try to send the message that it's okay to look girly and that matching is perfection!"
What makes an outfit?:  "Any accessory makes an outfit."  Hair clips, earrings, necklaces, or belts are among the ones Sarah uses to pull an outfit together.
Your no-limit gift card would be for: "Forever 21! There are so many choices there, it's ridiculous!"

Modest Marvel: Marwa Atik

You may not have yet heard her name, but if you shop for hijabs, you may have heard of her line - Vela.  A young and budding entrepreneur, Marwa's line, Vela, has caught the eye of a number of LA press and other well-known fashion sites, but us at Greater Lengths, it's her edgy style that has us hooked.

Marwa is part of the next generation of modestly-dressing women who bring a new take to fashion and being a stylish, modest dresser.  Her ideas and bold fashion is sure to catch the eyes of those who do and don't wear hijab!  Check out her line on her online retail site and on Facebook, and learn more about her below.

Marwa, stylin' it up during finals week

Background: Born and raised in California with roots in Syria, Marwa is the middle child of 5 siblings and currently attending the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) as an Apparel Management major.  If you're a native of LA, you'll find her all over downtown working on Vela and looking for new design inspirations

What we love about her style: Marwa's feminine style is laced with rocker edge: her sweet ballet flats are studded, adds zippers to her hijabs, and rocks work boots with fringed scarves.

Favorite pieces:  "A good handbag and jeans! It's important for me to find a chic handbag because I will often carry it out in every outfit and make use of it.  Also, lately I'm obsessed with the detailing that jeans have: from gold zippers at the ankles, to the textured print, the wash, fit, and detailed stitching at the knees.  I love finding  a good unique pair of styled jeans!"

About your style:  Marwa describes her style as a clash between Zara and Urban Outfitters (what did we say about feminine with a rocker edge?!) "I can be proper chic with the right blazer and top and then the next day id be wearing timberlands with a flannel shirt tied around my waist. It all depends on my mood and day!"


What makes an outfit:  For Marwa, it's all about her scarf.  "I think to any hijabi, it's important!"

Your no-limit gift card would be for: Nordstrom.  With a chuckle, she says, "Any smart girl would pick Nordstrom because you have access to almost every designer or brand!"

Modest Marvel: Always a Bridesmaid

Do you all remember when I said I was walking down the aisle, not once but TWICE, this September?  Well it happened.

No, I'm not married...but two of my dearest friends are!  Congratulations to Caroline (Chin) Goldwater and Katie (Sheehan) Sears, in whose picture-perfect weddings I happily took part in.  To their credit, they both have excellent taste in style and color, as both my dresses were flattering colors in shape and color (of utmost importance if you find yourself a bridesmaid).

To their credit, they were both great in allowing me to experiment with options to "modest-ify" my dresses.

The aqua blue dress is an Eden Bridal dress, style 7314, with a silver lurex bolero from Dorothy Perkins.  The sage green dress is from After Six 6586 with an eyelash lace top from Forever 21.  Theoretically, bridesmaids dresses are only worn on the day of the wedding, but I love these dresses and their modest modifications enough to wear them in the future.

Modest Marvel: Runna Othman (ISNA day 2)

This girl's got guts.  Various cuts and multiple colors makes Runna a risk-taker for sure, but she totally pulled it off.  I loved the over-sized sweater on skinnies - I would've totally missed the potential of the cardigan had I come across it myself - Runna here learned me some.  Honestly I can't even explain how this outfit works, it just does!  I think my favorite part is the neutral bag and shoes, genius move for a color-rich look.
