[Under $50] A European Craving
It’s been well documented (on this blog, anyway) that while
I was working on my recently-completed (alhumdullilah!) MBA from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, that prior to class I would usually go shopping…browsing anyway. There is a small block around 10th
and G Street NW in DC where you find a mecca of fast-fashion shops: Zara, H&M, Guess, Forever 21, and Anthropologie (maybe that’s not as fast as the others, but closer than, say, Macys, which is also nearby). If Asos had a store, I would be set with favorites.
Essentially, it was European fashion center, which is great for women seeking styles that allow us to dress modestly with style. These stores have affordable fashion but tend not to be as fitted or short.
Now that I am awaiting graduation (May 22, insha’Allah!), I have no reason to frequent that block as regularly, and I have to say – I miss it! I miss seeing sales and styles and gauging the next big trend. So in light of my homesickness for school, today’s post is dedicated to European fashion. Feast your eyes on my recent purchases (Asos), what I will be purchasing after this post is up (Zara), and what I’ll be checking out on my next H&M run (this weekend, maybe?).
Every time I saw the blue tunic top at Zara, my heart would skip a beat. I keep waiting for Katie Holmes to be featured in a mag sometime soon donning the same thing with her signature ankle booties. For me, it’ll likely be go with a pair of skinny jeans and loafers.

I made a LARGE purchase at Asos the other day, with the intention of returning items I do not intend to keep. Their free two-way shipping makes it easier to buy things just to check them out. While my order contains a whole lot more, here are a few items. The cold shoulder checked dress might be a bit of a challenge to style, but I’m thinking of layering with an oxford button down, for a classic pinafore look.

When you do not visit H&M for a while, you can easily miss entire collections – things shift in and out so quickly. Here are a few things I could see working well in modest fashion closets.

And finally, who doesn't love a little bit of Mango, especially when it's on sale? Unfortunately, Tysons Corner Mall took away the Mango we used to have (please bring it back!), but I regularly browse their site and found a few goodies for all of us.

FAVORITE FIND: Harem Pants at Zara

Reader Request: Peplum T-Shirt from Zara
Reader Nusrat asked us to style this Zara t-shirt, stating she was open to suggestions though preferred bottoms that were not fitted. "Straight, flared like palazzo and anything in between" was her request.
It can be tough for Muslim women to wear a peplum top. It's styled to fall at the natural waist and act as a cropped top, which makes many Muslim women who prefer their tops to fall well below the natural waist uncomfortable. Understandable and completely okay.
While peplums can't be lengthened (otherwise they're no longer a peplum...that's when they become a skirt or dress), Muslim women can dress them with wide leg pants. Wide legs don't hug curves while still erring on the side of modesty.
Our suggestion is to layer this peplum shirt with a cropped top, to add a bit more personality, while still showcasing the peplum.

Modest Marvel: Noor Tagouri (ISNA, Day 1)
I spotted Noor out of the corner of my eye. She was there promoting her friend's (Marwa Atik) line, Vela Scarves, and the beautiful color combination and texture of her outfit was impossible to turn away from.
Name: Noor Tagouri
Background: Noor is currently a student at the University of Maryland, earning a degree in Journalism, but also works for WPGC 95.5 in Washington, D.C and is a poet.
What we love about her style: Her unmistakenly amazing pants, with the pleats and movement, and clean colors of her scarf caught our eyes, making it impossible to turn away. Her top is from Zara and her pants are from Egypt, a gift from her grandmother. Her scarf is a Vela scarf, for which she was helping promote for a friend.
Favorite pieces: "Vela scarves and boots in the fall."
About her style: Very bohemian and vintage, she's frequents Urban Outfitters.
What are you looking to achieve in an outfit?: "I tend to dress in business attire and very professionally."
About her: Noor aspires to be the first Muslim-American broadcaster on American television.

FAVORITE FIND: The Must Have Zara Dress
Hi friends. On a recent trip to Zara (an absolute fav), I stumbled upon this beauty and had to share. It's got a casual smooth fall and that front and center applique does you the favor of coverage and funk all at once. It's on sale here for just $30, and comes in coral and black as well!
