REMIX: The Arthur Fonzarelli Style of Modest Style

The epitome of cool has always been to be able to wear an outfit baggy and pull it off with sass, style, and class. Sure, a neatly tailored skirt and a tucked in blouse looks pretty, but it's too...proper. And says things about me which are untrue, like I answer my emails immediately or that my car is never running under the "E" symbol on the gas gauge.

I like to have a little Arthur Fonzarelli in my modest stylecase; I skew to the Prince Harry side of the royal rebel spectrum, at least in my wardrobe.



Find the balance in the cool versus unkempt battle of the baggy look requires the right fit of the slouch. The key in this is is that you find loose fitted clothes, NOT oversized. I repeat, NOT oversized.  I'm going to repeat myself: DO NOT BUY OVERSIZED CLOTHES. It will make the difference between looking like you meant to dress like the mean streets of modest style, rather than throwing on things from the bottom of the hamper.

The tomboy look above is a great start to the slouchy, cool look. Pull together a pair of boyfriend chinos with a tunic button down and loose-fit tunic cardigan.  Everyone has something like this in their wardrobe that they can cobble together. Pair with lace-up oxfords and a statement necklace.

[REMIX] Keep It Close to the Chest with a Vest

In these, the doldrums of winter, my entire existence yearns for something new. At this point, all the fun of the season has come and gone, as have the new trends and fashion excitement. Designers and trendmakers are turning their eyes to the spring (and really, the season after next), giving the current season no further mind. In the real world, however, we’re struggling to not grow bored of our wardrobe and find a new way to wear something we’re tired of wearing.

As most modest dressing women do, I have quite a few tunic-length button down tops. As the shirtdress phenomena picked up, so did I incorporate a bunch of them into my wardrobe. But now what? It’s boring to wear only the shirtdress over dress pants (what has become my standard work attire) and call it a day. I want something more!

Enter the vest. A quick and easy remix for a modest dressing woman’s wardrobe, a simple vest can make the difference between new and renewed. What’s especially great about the right vest is that it can be worn over a variety of tops - button-down top (a staple in a modest fashion stylista’s closet), a sweater tunic, and even a long-sleeved dress.

REMIX: Faux Leather, Button Downs, and Skinny Jeans (inspired by Atlantic-Pacific)

Can you tell I'm on an Atlantic-Pacific/Blair Eadie kick?  Or it might be my yearning for New York City and her characteristically New York backdrops that keep me coming back.  Or it could be her style, plain and simple.

I like her blend of hard edge mixed with feminine accents (many of her blog posts contain images of her wearing chain metal, spiky bracelets, and other hardwear with big puffy skirts and tons of bows.)  This outfit isn't quite as dualistic, but it's clear to see her rocker style emerging over the soft feminine touches.

REMIX: Denim Jackets, Maxi Skirts, and Chambray Shirts

You may have seen our post on maxi skirts, perhaps even coveted a few of them, but ultimately weren't sure what to do once you had them.  "How do I style this modestly, yet stylishly...without having to buy extra clothes?"

After a season of sweater dresses, the new "it" item is the cropped sweater and unavoidable at our favorite stores.  How to wear this new trend without making our Muslim selves uncomfortable with the exposure?

Answer: the shirt dress.

This look is a take on the classic button down shirt and sweater combo, but with a bit of chicness and edge to it.  As Muslim women, our closets likely house a shirt dress that pairs perfectly with a cropped sweater, so go ahead and take the leap - wear that cropped sweater and see how easy it is to stay in style!
