Less Talk, More Posting

Maybe it's because my birthday is coming up, or maybe in a pre-emptive strike to be prepared for any weddings or bridal showers or glamourous baby showers, or maybe it's just that I've perused one too many post-award show galleries, but I've got gown fever.

I saw a few friends this weekend who also 1) requested that I post more and 2) asked if I had any evening gowns up my sleeve. And yes, yes, I do.

These:

I particularly love the skirt:

Reader Request: Eid Evening Gowns

A friend invited me to an iftar night out - essentially, grabbing iftar at a halal-friendly eatery (in this case, the wonderfully satisfying Burger 7 where I had not one but TWO burgers to break my fast). Conversation got around to what and where we're finding Eid clothes. I generally look for Pakistani clothes, which either my mom or me will find at the 11th hour, but I embrace anyone who wears American clothes to celebrate - because being American is part of our identity, in addition to any ethnic or other cultural practices we have.

Back to clothes...one of the attendees, Yasmin, is looking for a sleeved evening gown, and is willing to put down up to $150 for a nice gown for Eid. She wears hijab and prefers not to have to jerry rig any gown to be modest, but will do it if needed. Additionally, she stated she's looking for more "muted" colors, but you guys know me - I live for sequins and embellishments.

I put my finders out there and came up with a few options for Yasmin (and you, if you're also looking for an Eid outfit!). What do you think? What will you be wearing this Eid?

[Evening Gowns] I like gowns gowns gowns...

[Before even beginning, can anyone guess where I got that title from?  Or what it might be referencing?  Think song and big name rapper.]

One of Nordstrom's signature events, the half-yearly sale, is currently ongoing for women.  Depending on what you're looking for, it can be a great way to pick up one of a kind items for a real steal.  Our reader (and consequently, cousin!) Furheen requested we find a few cocktail and evening gowns.  Guessing that when you're looking for cocktail and evening gowns, you're hitting a higher price point than most items in your closet, we've gathered up the most modest or modest-ifiable dresses currently on sale at Nordstrom.

My personal fave of this mix is this sequin jersey dress from JS Boutique (actually, check out the strapless Adrianna Papell dresses below...those are some exquisite beauties as well!) because for a Muslim woman like me, it's nice to be able to wear something so beautiful with as little modification as possible.  This dress covers your back nicely and isn't so low in the front.

With either a tank top layered under and a cardigan, or a plain long t-shirt, you've nicely tailored this evening gown into something more modest.

Just a note - the prices displayed are the retail price.  Click on each item to be taken directly to the Nordstorm site to see the sale price!

An Evening to Remember - Proper Toppers

As Muslim women, we go to great lengths to ensure the propriety of our dress, especially that clothing not intended for Islamic modesty, like evening gowns.  Cardigans and tops do provide some coverage, however, the lines and loveliness of a beautiful gown can be lost if topped by a frumpy, unmatched cover up.  Below is a compilation of options for a proper topper to ensure that not only does your evening gown meet you Islamic lifestyle and dress, but that you are entirely the bell of the ball in wearing it.

An Evening to Remember - Spring-toned Gowns

Spring is in the air, and we find inspiration from the colors popping up around us -strawberry-hued day lilies brightening our day, golden daffodils waving hello, and purple hyacinths spreading their joy.  These modestly-priced gowns will hopefully find a place in your closet for those outdoor spring and summer soirees.  Long on length, they are perfect for that chic, Muslim woman.  See our post on tops for options on how to cover up the revealing necklines.

While this gown is a bit out of the price range, it's fun to look at:

But we think your wallet will like these a bit more.

An Evening to Remember - Printed Gowns

While it's nice to wow with solid colors and shimmery sequins, sometimes you need a good print.  Here are some options for a little razzle dazzle to stick out from the crowd of uni-colored dresses.  All priced under $130, they're sure to add some glamour without breaking the bank.

Remember to check out the rest of our series on evening gowns here and here.

An Evening to Remember - Strapless Gowns

I get to look forward to many things this year, but among the best are two weddings in which I have the honor of being a bridesmaid. People often share war stories of serving as a bridesmaid, but it's something I truly enjoy. Dote on someone I love for an entire day or more?? Yes, please! In my search for an Islamically appropriate dress, I came across this BCBG gown that I would pay the arm and leg I can't spare to own.

Unfortunately, I am not independently wealthy (at least not yet), and should not be considering a $348 dress.  These dresses below are a bit more wallet friendly with a wow factor all their own.

Don't forget to check out our previous posts on evening gowns here.

An Evening to Remember - Shimmery Dresses

A friend of mine recently posted a photo of herself and her husband on a red carpet.  She had beautifully matched a printed full-length, full-skirt maxi dress with a leather jacket and black chiffon hijab.  Effortlessly chic and stunningly regal at the same time.

In honor of her red-carpet appearance, and the need for every Muslim woman to own at least one sparkling gown, we encourage everyone to think about what their closet needs as their "go-to" for their party-dress - for weddings, for work parties, or if you find yourself on one, the red-carpet.

Of the ones I'd pick, this is my first-choice: The Evening of Effervecence Dress, available for $94.90 at ModCloth.  Those waves create a softness and movement to the dress without losing interest.

Compiled are a few others, just as soft and pretty, with a little detail for your personal style.

A Good Place to Start

Another coverage compatible find. I love this dress with a pair of dressy skinnies and a few colorful accessories for really unique formal look.

Parade Those Prints!

Pull the striking prints in this gown together with neutrals like a nude snood (yes that's what they're calling furry scarves these days) and a beige belt, or bring out the heat with darker toned accessories.  Either way, a stand-out look is in the making.

Fashionably Formal

So much to love about this Calvin Klein dress ($150 on E-Bay!). It's chic and graceful without all the usual curve-huggery. And the action isn't all at the bust - instead the eyes glide down that shimmering column of sequins rising up from pretty pleats.

Luxurify by wearing it with a bold fur vest and shiny long-sleeved tee, or keep it elegant with either of the shrugs.
